Today we enjoyed a leisurely Danube Cruise along the most scenic section of the river.

Our coach picked us up and we were treated to a spectacular drive past Lake Wolfgang, than stopping in St. Gilgen. This area has long been popular for scenic walking and lake activities. Dotted along the resort area are several beaches and boats readily available for hire to explore. St. Gilgen is a traditional Austrian village brimming with pretty frescoed houses, cafes and shops. The following day we were given a walking tour of Salzburg. I particularly love the Old Town. We stopped for finger salami sandwiches, fluffy chocolate croissants (I dream about these!) and cappuccinos.

Nonnberg Abbey is visible from just about every point in Salzburg. It was built between 713 and 715 and is considered one of the oldest abbey's in the world. It is here that the nuns sing "Maria".
St. Peter's Cemetery: It is here that the dramatic flight scenes were filmed.

This is the bridge that the children danced on with Maria.
The children sang 'Do-Re-Mi' in these gardens.
That afternoon we joined an optional excursion to Hitler's summer headquarters in the Berchtesgarden district. A fascinating private scenic road lead to Eagle's Nest, a chalet-style building which was built by the Nazi's in the mountains of Berchtesgarden. Nicknamed Eagle's Nest by a French diplomat, it was meant to be a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries.
