I am finding most valuable those special moments I share with loved ones….particularly the laughter and bonding this past week at a Collins family reunion. (I am a Collins, the third of seven).
It is difficult enough to plan a family vacation, what with all the conflicting schedules! It used to be soccer and ice-skating, now it is internships and “real job” experiences. (I’m not complaining as I know that all parents strongly encourage their young adults to pursue summer employment.)
Now back to my family reunion story. To attempt to coordinate the schedules for roughly 25 family members is a daunting task. I had been thinking about getting together with the family but knew that an active group would inevitably pose scheduling problems. There were schedule conflicts but everyone was going to do the very best they could. After all this was a present for two very special people, Mom and Dad.
I have lived in the Chicago-land area for my whole life and have never really taken advantage of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Of course it was crowded on a beautiful August weekend, however the areas of Fontana, Williams Bay and Delavan are within minutes of downtown Lake Geneva and offer less congestion and just as many recreational activities. Location was essential for a successful Collins family reunion this year! You can’t beat 90 minutes from home.
As Saturday morning was beautiful, we spent some time walking along the path which runs for 21 miles along the lake. (No, we did not walk 21 miles, however one day I do plan to attempt this.) The scenery is lovely, and the glistening lake was full of young and old, with kayaks, sail boats, para-sails, early morning swimmers, speed boats and pontoons. We didn't have time for "The Lady of the Lake", a fully narrated excursion highlighting the history and estates on Lake Geneva.
In the afternoon we rented a Cobalt speed boat to fit seven, from Gordy’s on Fontana Beach. Everyone took turns as the experience was a first for many. Brendan, our driver, was in control, only stepping it up a bit as his sister was tubing. (The only time she let go of the handles was to taunt her brother, motioning him to go faster!) Needless to say, we could have had the Cobalt all afternoon. Next time I know we will.
We were lucky enough to find a resort in Delavan, which had a one-night minimum. (For August a two-night minimum was what we were running into.) The one and two bedroom suites at Lake Delavan Resort were spacious, the indoor and outdoor pools were enjoyed by the many young swimmers in the family, and the large balconies overlooking the pool and Delavan Lake were spacious and provided a wonderful gathering area.
Less than 10 minutes away we reserved a private room at Kirsch’s Restaurant, on the premises of the French Country Inn, located in Lake Geneva. The room was only 15 feet from the shore of Lake Como with gorgeous views and spectacular sunsets. The menu was pre-arranged. Family photos followed dinner.
My sister had a friend who graciously let her stay at their home in Delavan for the weekend. It is there that we all gathered the next morning for wonderfully baked goods from Biel’s in downtown Delavan.
The time sped by! The reunion was short, but perfect for our large family. I know that everyone is anticipating next year’s event.
Reunions don’t have to be a plane ride away. The whole point is to spend time together – however and wherever it will work for everyone. (FYI: We are repeating this event next year and have already set the date.)
